Project Synopsis
Context
The company’s performance management strategy was being updated and needed instructional pieces to help employees and managers understand the process at each of three milestones throughout the year. The plan was to create two videos per milestone - one set for employees and one for managers - plus two additional videos covering development conversations and another performance process. Each video needed to be ready in time to support its corresponding milestone rollout.
My Role
This project required versatility and creative collaboration. I teamed closely with a designer, SMEs, and a stakeholder. As the developer, I took the scripts drafted by the designer and SMEs, bringing them to life in a way that met both stakeholder preferences and global contextualization needs. Due to some unplanned review cycles during script writing, we faced a tight development cycle. I took advantage of the unexpected downtime to prototype some options for the visual look of the videos so that I would be ready to “plug and play” when the scripts were finalized. The stakeholder was steadfastly holding to a style they had in mind that was neither achievable in the timeframe set nor poised for understandability globally. I listened carefully to their preferences and created three diverse options that would both fit the timeframe and serve our global audience. After some revision to fine tune to the stakeholder’s preferences, the style was finalized. I began creating some templated scenes that could be leveraged throughout the videos without looking too repetitive.
Once the scripts were ready, I began working on the videos. I leveraged new AI capabilities in Vyond to accelerate aspects of development. I then carefully selected and created assets from scratch, ensuring they were simple, highly communicative, and reflective of what our global audience would be experiencing in our performance management platform. When I identified some acronyms in the script that would not work in non-English languages, I worked with the designer to revise and present new suggested solutions that would reach a broader audience.
When our PM fell ill with no available backup, I stepped in to lead our project meetings, help to facilitate agreement between the cross-functional team members, and keep the project on track.
Also during this project, an initiative from company leadership to find ways to reduce the reliance on an external vendor for translation was introduced, as using the vendor was expensive and added significant time to the project. I partnered with the project director and our internal localization team to experiment and find a faster, more economical process for translation. The approach proved successful, cutting four weeks off of the existing translation timeline and saving money in the process.
The Results
The videos proved to be an engaging experience that has been viewed over 60,000 times since 2025, often aligned to the timing of the performance cycle milestones, proving the “just in time” usefulness. The videos presented the content clearly regardless of an employee’s local language. All assets, including translations, were delivered early. Several commenters noted that the videos were helpful for performance management tasks. Despite the early delays, all videos were rolled out to align with the milestones they covered.
Stakeholders, SMEs, and Directors within the organization noted the clarity and professionalism of the video series. Our lead SME awarded the team company reward points, recognizing the teamwork we demonstrated throughout the project. I also received individual recognition from leadership at multiple levels in the organization for the quality of my work while saving the company time and money.
